Sweepstake Match at
Colver
Twenty members turned up to fish a Sweepstake Match on Colver Lake last
Sunday on a very cold morning, most reported clearing frost off the windscreens before setting out!. That has been
the form over the last week or so, beautifully warm spring days have been preceded by cold nights....Typical spring
weather in fact!! .
In form, Mick Nash, pulled out peg 18 at the draw. At the moment you are
not sure whether to be happy or sad when drawing this peg as the one time guaranteed form of this peg has been
somewhat patchy of late! After a slowish start, though, Mick started to catch pretty consistently from the far bank
using pellet on the hook. At the whistle his 46lb 12oz was easily enough to take top spot on the day.
It was the opposite corner "end peg" 46 that Malc Spring was happy to draw,
this seems to be a pretty consistent peg at the moment and Malc made no mistake by finishing with a hard earned
28lb 10oz. The cold nights and warm days seem to have left the fish not really knowing what's going on at the
moment with the Carp seemingly well spread over the lake, but not really feeding. There were countless big fish
foul hooked and subsequently lost! Paul Cooke was one such angler his 27lb 12oz would have probably been doubled
had he landed all the fish that he hooked...and then lost! Cookie, finally, settling for third place.
The most difficult section was in the early numbers and Alan Smith needed
just 11lb 2oz to take Section 1 form peg 7. Colin Slater probably had more foul hooked fish than anyone on peg 21.
It seemed that every time anyone looked up Colin's elastic was shooting out of the end of his Pole, but sadly most
were foul hookers that escaped before they could be safely captured. At the whistle Colin's 26lb 8oz was enough for
the Section 2 prize. Section 3 went to Den Porter with 22lb 1oz from peg 32 and Keith Macfarlane netted 14lb to
claim the Section 4 prize from peg 40.

Great Start to Big Fish
League
It really has been a fantastic start to the year as far as the Big Fish League
is concerned. We have had four enteries already in the first month of the competition. For anyone who
doesn't know, the Big Fish League runs from 1st March until the last day if
February each year. At the discretion of the committee, a trophy will be awarded to the member who catches the
heaviest fish of each species, on rod and line, in Society waters. Each entry must be weighed and witnessed by
two other members and details sent to the Secretary (Alan Smith). Please ensure that all such fish are
returned to the water alive. The first entry for this year was a specimen Bream weighing in at a whopping
9lb 5oz!! Cliff Greaves caught this monster at Meadow Lane. The next entry came after the recent Pike League
Match, a day when two specimen Pike were landed!! Mariusz Kosakowski netted a superb specimen that tipped the
scales at 22lb 8oz early in the match only for Derek Cramp to out do him with this monster weighing in at 25lb
8oz....A specimen from any water. So a warning must go out to all members....don't dangle your
toes in the water at Jurassic!!! . You might end up only being able to count to
nineteen. Keeping up the Big Fish activity was Michael Kilbourne. Michael decided to go for a session on one
of his favourite Broome waters, Jasons Lake. He caught this hungry 2lb Perch on a single white maggot, without
putting any loose feed into his peg! It seems to have inspired him as he says he is determined to get his name
on a couple of the Big Fish trophy's by the end of the season. Mark Hopkins, then submitted his entry, an 11lb 6oz specimen that was the
biggest of three fish, a Common of 11lb 1oz and a Mirror weighing in at 8lb 8oz, all caught in a session on
BJ's Lake. All three fish fell to fried luncheon meat soaked in curry sauce.....(them Carp'll eat anything
....). Some fine fish to start the League off for
this year, I'm sure you'll agree. There we go there are four contenders up now, all waiting to be beaten. So
get out there and see what's lurking in our waters. There are plenty of categories without a contender yet so
hopefully we will have good competition for the trophy's this year. You will be able to see full sized images
of all of these fish in the respective anglers Gallery page in the next few days.

Water Treatment on BJ's Lake
Terry and Brian have started the water treatment program on BJ's Lake. The
club are trying to combat the excessive weed growth that occurs every summer rendering the majority of pegs on the
lake unfishable in the spring/summer months.
A die is added to the water that creates a "dark screen" over the surface
of the lake. The idea is to prevent sunlight from reaching the weed and so prevent it from growing. This die is
100% safe to ALL living creatures, so please don't worry or feel the need to inform anyone if you see the colour of
the water looking somewhat unusual.
The project is expected to last until the end of the year.
The die will not affect the fish, and members can carry on fishing the lake as
normal.

Sweepstake Match at Colver
There will be a Sweepstake Match on Colver Lake this Sunday 25th March. Any Club member is
welcome to attend. The last draw for pegs will be at 9.00am with fishing starting at 10.00am and the all out will
be 3.00/3.30pm. Match Pools will be £10 all in with an optional £5.00 super pool for anyone who is feeling lucky
. The lake remains open to other anglers not taking
part in the match.
