Work Party time again!

Once again everyone's favourite time of the year has arrived. Time to spruce up our waters and get all the maintenance work done ahead of the coming season. And as we always say, this work cannot be done without the help of you, the members. Last year saw good turnouts at each of the six work parties that took place and it really made the work so much quicker and easier. The old adage of "many hands make light work" is very apt at this time of the season.

The first will take place on Sunday 6th May at Meadow Lane, Syston at around 8am. Even if you are not at the peak of your physical fitness (99% of Members ) please come along there is always something that someone will need a little assistance with.

Please remember that Meadow lane will be closed to all members until 1.00pm, except for members who have assisted, they will be able to fish once the work has been completed.

There will be a "knock up" at Jasons Lake after Sundays work party.

The same will apply for the second work party, to be held at Frisby on Sunday 13th May. The venue will be closed on that day to all members not assisting until 1.00pm.

There will be a knock up after the Frisby Work party, open only to attendee's, on Colver Lake.

So come along to the first two Work Parties they are usually good fun and there will be, as ever, tea/coffee and biscuits served at half time .

Sweepstake Match at Smiggies

With a few of the usual "match crew" away on holiday or fishing elsewhere it was a depleted squad of nine members who turned up to fish a Sweepstake at Smiggies Lake last Sunday (22/4/12). Those who chose not to come missed a decent days sport, with nearly everyone weighing in double figure catches.

Out in front was Simon Pepper, who was happy to draw peg 25. In a strong and gusting wind Simon did well to fish at 14.5meters on the Long Pole. He fed chopped worm and caster to catch a succession of decent sized Silvers in the first couple of hours. After the bigger fish had drifted away Simon carried on netting smaller Roach, Silvers and Chub to take 24lb 4oz to the scales for a well earned 1st prize.

The Cormorant, Chris Shore, chose his spot well. Peg 29 was the only peg that offered any protection against the wind, and Chris used it to good effect. Fishing close to the Island he caught small Chub, Silvers and the odd Skimmer throughout the competition. A few of the bigger Silvers, later on, helped push Cormorants weight to 19lb 8oz, and second place on the day.

Section winners were Steve Beckhurst on peg 1 with 17lb 11oz of, again, small fish mixed in with the odd bigger Silver, plus three of the elusive, recently stocked, Barbel. Vinnie Logie added a 5lb Bream to his mixed fish net to claim the Section 2 prize with 11lb 6oz from peg 27.

The Carp are feeding!

jc03aThere have been a couple of pictures sent in over the weekend of sizeable fish caught from our waters. The first, on the left was caught by John Caunt whilst on a session fishing BJ's lake with his son David.gh02a Below, John, tells the story...

Here is a picture of a common carp I caught on BJ's lake this morning at around 7.00am, while I was fishing with, my son, Dave. The water was very calm, and I was fishing a bolt rig with a size 10 hook, baited with a chunk of luncheon meat and one grain of sweetcorn. It was my first cast and I was surprised when it was hooked within 5 mins!! It gave me a real fight, and as you can see it is in pristine condition weighing in at 14lb 7oz.

To the right we have another fine fish. This one netted by Gav Hill at Meadow Lane, Syston, on Friday 20th April. This 15lb 5oz beauty fell for a Pepperami and Sweetcorn cocktail. Full sized images can be seen in the respective anglers Gallery pages.

Sweepstake Match at Smiggies

Easter Sunday saw eleven members turn up for a sweepstake match on Smiggies lake. The numbers reduced from recent weeks, probably because of the holidays. But it has to be said that the smaller attendance saw the lake fish much better than of late, with numerous double figure weights.

Paul Cooke chose to use a "chopped worm" approach as his opening gambit, and it proved to be an inspired choice. Cookie had a succession of Silvers in the first couple of hours. Along with a 3lb'ish Tench it took his total to a very impressive 36lb for first place.

Runner up spot went to Steve Beckhurst on peg 7. Feeding with maggot eventually brought some of the bigger Silvers to the net, after the open hour's catch was, mainly, made up of small Silvers and small Chublets. A bonus 3lb Tench and two good sized Skimmers for about 2lb pushed the weight to 23lb 14oz, and second place overall.

Simon Pepper headed the rest and it was pretty touch and go who would make the final frame place. There were five or six anglers all with similar catches around the 12 to 14lb mark, Simon just coming out on top with 14lb 6oz from peg 20.

Section 1 went to Chris "Cormorant" Shore from peg 9 with 12lb 14oz. Dave Kimber taking Section 2 from peg 24 with 13lb 8oz.
