Away day at Mill-on-the-Soar

Twelve Members decided to brave the near gale force winds and had an away day match last Sunday (23/2/14), at Mill-on-the-Soar fishery near Narborough. With the mild weather, of late, the Lake fished quite well with everyone getting a few fish.

Top rod on the day was Steve Beckhurst. Drawn on peg 30 Steve decided to fish maggot as close as possible in order to try to combat the downstream wind. He was getting a fish a chuck for more or less the first three hours, although they were very small! . A change to try in the margins proved decisive , as seven Carp fell to his Pole fished sweetcorn to give him top weight of 39lb 12oz.

Next peg and just 4oz behind was Lee Nash. Lee had to fish Pole at 10meters in order to find any fish and did well in the windy conditions to amass 39lb 8oz for the runner-up position. Lee also netted seven Carp, along with a few Skimmers and a few Roach. All of Lee's fish were tempted by soft pellet on the hook, whilst feeding micro pellets.

Vinnie Logie fished similar tactics to Lee, and netted some decent sized Skimmers from peg 36. He also put four Carp on the scales to weigh in with 20lb 12oz for third place on the day.

Chris Lee, peg 18, took Section 1 with 13lb 12oz with Phil Sansby winning the Section 2 prize with 12lb 8oz from peg 38.

Sweepstake at Jasons

Ten Members fished a sweepstake match on Jasons last Sunday (9/2/14). Unfortunately, the weather, once again, made the going very tough. With the wind making bait presentation very difficult and the, seemingly, endless rain affecting levels the weights were well down.

Dave Kimber was one of the few to catch a Carp and it helped to boost his weight to a match winning 9lb 12oz from peg 17. Dave also netted a monster 3lb+ Perch. Runner-up spot went to Kev Hirons who drew the infamous peg 4, Kev also had a carp in his weight of 8lb 14oz.

Vinni Logie took section 1 with 2lb 15oz from peg 2, with Mick Farmery claiming Section 2 with 5lb 8oz from peg 21.

Sweepstake at Sanctuary

There is not a great deal, unfortunately, to report from a Sweepstake Match that was fished on Sanctuary last Sunday (26/1/14). With gale force winds and driving rain it was not surprising that there were only seven anglers present at the 9am draw.

Keith Macfarlane won the day with 2lb 6oz from peg 7, with Mick Nash netting 2lb 2oz from peg 5 to claim the runner-up spot.

Needless to say all went home very cold and very wet....Roll on the summer!!

James ends the frustration!!

After quite a frustating few weeks of Piking, James Crabtree finally got rid of his frustations by having a great day on Jurassic. Read his story, below...

jcr01

After spending the last two pike matches on Jurassic with the grand total of one missed run and no fish, added to an afternoon around New Year with a number of missed runs and no fish, I decided to travel light and fish swims for 30-40 minutes to try and find them.  The tactic paid off as I ended up with five fish from different swims, the first of which was just over 10lb within a few minutes of casting out. I had two jacks of about 4lb and another of just under 7lb, but the middle fish of the day was a lovely specimen of 16lb - the biggest I've had from Broome waters to date.

All fish came to float-ledgered deadbait - and after 3 blanks, 40lb of pike in a session was more than welcome!

The photo is of the 16lb fish.
