Frisby Workparty 23/5/10

Sunday saw the second of the workparties and once again all of the work was concentrated at Frisby. Jurassic, Sanctuary and Jasons Lakes had the benefit of, once again, about 20-25 eager volunteers. It was nice to see a couple of new faces for a change. Because of all of the hard work done in the last few years, this year has not been quite so difficult at Frisby. Even so, these work parties are vitally important in keeping swims fishable, approachs clear and trees/bushes pruned etc etc.

The action next week (30/5/10) will all be happening at Meadow Lane Lake, Syston. So please remember that the Lake will be closed for fishing until 2.00pm on sunday whilst the work is done. All other Lake venues will be open as normal.

The "Work Party Sweepstake" was held on Smiggys Lake and with a sweltering hot, bright sunny day it was thought that the fishing could be a little difficult.... well those expectations were, somewhat, turned on their head!! The whole Lake fished remarkably well .

In all, ten of the work party volunteers elected to fish the match. Out in front at the final whistle was Mick Farmery. Mick pulled out peg 22 at the draw, a peg that has shown some good form on occasions, and Mick made no mistake, putting seven Bream and two Tench on the scales for a fine weight of 36lb 14oz...well done Mick .

Den Porter had a similar catch to Mick but was just about two or three fish short of challenging Mick for top spot. A good second placed weight of 26lb 12oz from peg 1, though, would be more than enough to take home first prize on many other days.

Keeping it in the family  Jason Farmery filled the last place in the frame with yet another good weight, 23lb 13oz, from peg 25. With the ten competitors spread evenly around the Lake almost 9lb was the lowest weight. Alan Smith netted an "all small fish" catch of 15lb and Dave Kimber took 22lb to the scales...all of which were small silver fish apart from one Bream. So if you like to see your float dipping and action aplenty....get yourself down to Smiggys!!

Frisby Workparty 16/5/10

The first of this years workparties commenced on Sunday, with work on both Smiggys Lake and BJs Lake. A great deal of work was completed by the willing crew of around twenty. As normal it was the same old faces, once again, giving up their spare time to help out. Having said that, there were one or two members who hadn't been before, so thanks very much to them, and the regulars for all their hard work. As we always say, if you can spare a couple of hours on a Sunday morning why not come along, get a bit of fresh air, and help to keep your club waters in tip top condition.

The customary Sweepstake match was held after the workparty for those participants who wanted to enter. The nine entrants decided on Colver as the venue and it proved a good choice with plent of fish caught by all of the anglers.

In form, Chris Shore, once again topped the pile with a good weight of 88lb 14oz from peg 40. Because there were only nine fishing, each angler had two free pegs either side, and the other two framing weights were the two pegs next to Chris. Mick Farmery on peg 34 with 86lb, and Simon Pepper in between with 73lb 8oz on peg 37. There were plenty of other weights topping 50lb, so its encouraging to see Colver in such good form this early in the season

Smiggys Lake Sweepstake 5/5/10

Eleven members held a sweepstake match on Smiggys Lake last sunday (2/5/10). It is now a well known fact that the meteorological office will contact Broome AS to see if there is going to be any fishing matches held on Smiggys Lake before they issue any gale force wind warnings!!! They have found this a much better method of predicting the wind than that old Sinclair Computer that they usually rely on .

Although the wind was quite awkward, and cold, after the recent good weather, it didn't seem to upset the fish to much. There were several double figure weights among the competitors, and 4lb+ was the lowest recorded weight.

Out on top was Keith Macfarlane on peg 15. Keith netted four good Bream and around 6lb of silver fish and gudgeon. Because of the windy conditions Keith decided to fish at 7meters on the Pole, a distance where he felt bait presentation would not be to badly affected by the conditions....it paid off as all of his fish came on this line.

Frank Lyons drew peg 8, and also found the fish in feeding mode. Frank also landed four good Bream and he netted some of the bigger Skimmers to finish the Match just 4oz behind Keith with 20lb.

Section 1 was won by Mick Farmery from peg 19. Mick had a similar catch to Keith but was one Bream short of Keiths total. Mick landing three Bream and about 4-5lb of Silvers for 15lb 14oz. Chris "Cormorant" Shore kept up his recent good run of form by claiming Section 2 with 17lb 4oz from peg 22. It was slightly more sheltered in Chris's peg and opted to fish further out on the Pole for his three Bream and mixed Silver fish.
