Went to Kilworth on 3/3/15 and set up fishing on Currans for the perch. Using my 5m whip, I was fishing worm hook
baits and loose feeding maggots, casters and chopped worm. The first one I hooked was a good 2lb+ but,
unfortunately, the hook pulled when the fish dived for cover after I had been playing it for a couple of
minutes. I won’t lie….gutted! After that, the spot died, so I went for a walk along the bank to try some other
spots, hoping to avoid the carp I normally manage to find. The first spot produced a common carp of about 4lb, the
second, another common of about 2lb. The third spot was better, producing a perch of 1lb 11oz and a bonus
roach of about 8-10oz.
After these, I went back to where I started, and the first fish was another perch of 2lb 8oz, which was definitely
a different fish to the one I had on Friday, looking at its markings/colouration. Shortly after, I had a third
perch of 2lb exactly. As you can see from the picture, it was about dark by this time, so I called it a day after
weighing/photographing it.
Went over to Kilworth today (27/02/15) Started on Lizzies fishing lures, unsuccessfully, again. After lunchtime, I
moved on to Currans, but my fortunes didn’t change. About 3ish, I decided to pack the lure rod away, and got out my
6ft feeder rod. I spent a while ledgering prawns to the far bank, but didn’t have any luck there either. I then
decided to try the near margins and swapped over to worms. Very soon, I hooked a big perch….and then it came off.
Undeterred, I swung the bait back into position, and quickly hooked another one. This one wasn’t getting
away! It was weighed and photographed with two witnesses, Nick and Jimmy Hales. It is my best perch from
Currans at 2lb 8oz. A short while after, I also managed to land another of 1lb 6oz but didn’t get a
picture.
On Saturday 21st February, I headed over to Kilworth to do some Perch fishing using lures. After fishing the
morning away on Lizzies, Admirals and Currans, (unsuccessfully) I decided to spend the afternoon on Lambies,
fishing a 6ft ‘magic wand’ tip rod, paired with a closed face reel. I was using a small maggot feeder to
feed pinkies into the swim, using pinkies and worms for hookbaits. In four hours, I caught 16 carp for a total
weight of 24lb 6oz. Not a bad day after all.
Went over to Frisby on 11/1/15 for a pleasure fishing session with Shawn. We fished on Jurassic lake for
pike. After losing what felt like a good fish at about 09:30, I finally had another take just after
lunchtime and landed a jack of about 4-5lbs. Not massive, but I was thrilled as it was my FIRST EVER, and it has
taken five piking sessions from the beginning of the last season to get it. I would have liked to get an
accurate weight for my first one, but, it was hooked quite deeply, and once I had unhooked it, I didn’t want to
cause it anymore stress, and so put it straight back after a quick photo.
Went over to Kilworth on Christmas Eve and had a few hours fishing with my 5 metre whip. Using maggots and casters,
I caught all the fish pictured. The biggest perch was 1lb 3oz. It took a single caster. Not a massive
total weight, but a little over 4lb is not bad for a few hours on a cold, windy, winters morning. Spent the
afternoon live baiting for the really big perch but they were being very difficult!
