Winter League results improve...slightly!
At least this week the Winter League Match did not require the participants to limber up with an hours practice for the Olympic hammer throwing event!! All of the lakes are, at long last, completely free of ice (hoo-ray!!).
Sadly the actual fishing was not all that was hoped for.... After a week of temperatures in double figures almost everyone was expecting a good days action. On reflection, though, after all the Lakes have been through in the previous month and half it was, possibly, expecting a lot for a quick return to form.
Not that I could complain too much, as my 3lb 9oz was enough to take home first prize.... . Just three good sized Silvers and one bonus Tench represented six hours of hard labour in the blustery winds, all of the fish coming in the first three hours of the competition. In the last three hours, just a couple of half bites/liners were the only signs of life.
Mark Aitkins, in second place had a similar catch from peg 1, his bonus fish being a Bream.... It seems that the bigger Bream may have suffered the most from the freeze up as the one Mark landed was in pretty poor condition. Steve Harrison, on peg 23, also netted a bonus Tench and along with three Silvers, Steve came in third with 3lb 2oz. Again Steve caught all of his fish in the first half of the match.
Section 1 went to Jason Farmery who included a fine perch of 1lb 10oz in his 2lb 6oz total. Simon Pepper managed to net five small Skimmers in the later stages of the competition, but they were soon to disappear, and along with a bonus Perch of about 1lb, Simon took Section 2 with 2lb 2oz.
