Struggle for all at Smiggys

Round six of this seasons Winter League proved to be a real struggle for the matchmen on Sunday. Virtually all of the fish were caught in the first 45 minutes and last 45 minutes of the competition. The middle four and half hours saw very few fish landed, with most anglers not even registering so much as a bite during this middle period. Most were confidant at the draw, as the Lake had a decent colour, and the weather, was set fair....In fact it turned out to be a beautiful spring day.....The fish, though, were not in a feeding mood!!

Kev Hyrons, on peg 17, won the match in the first ten minutes!!! he cast his waggler to the middle of the Lake and within two or three minutes Kev was playing a Tench of around 3-4lb....Next cast and his float dipped again....This time it was a Bream of similar size!!! Two casts later and kev was playing a Perch of about 1lb or so. By this time Kev thought he was going to empty the Lake , but just two small Roach were all that were to follow and he spent the next five and three quarter hours without a bite!!! Its a funny old game, as someone once said....Kevins early action, though was enough to take the spoils.

Cookie on peg 21 had virtually the opposite match to Kevin. Cookie had managed to net just two or three small Silver fish all day. With the clock showing 3pm, after threatening to pack up and go home for the umpteenth time , Pauls float suddenly sailed away and he was into a 4lb Bream! About two seconds before the "all out" sounded, he hooked into an even bigger Bream..... "Golden ----s" Cookie had gone from nowhere to second place in the space of less the 30 minutes!

Mark Aikens had been sitting pretty for most of the match with two Bream caught in the early stages, and with no one catching he was confidant of at least second place....Sadly for mark, though, his fish were slightly smaller than Cookie's so he had to settle for third place with his 8lb 4oz from peg 25.

Section winners on the day were Steve Harrison with 5lb from peg 2, myself with 5lb 3oz from peg 15 and of course the "Cormorant", Chris Shore , nicked in with Section 3 with 4lb 7oz from peg 27.
