Tough going on Sanctuary
The ice may well have left us, for the present at least!! but the latest round of this seasons Winter League didn't really respond to the improved conditions. Sanctuary Lake, though, it must be said, never really has been a Lake that responds well to the angling pressure that comes with a fishing match. With all fourteen pegs needing to be used it was never going to be easy. There had been reports of decent catches of, mainly, the newly stocked fish coming to pleasure anglers during the previous week; but they were not to show in any great number in the match.
Although the results look pretty good on paper it was only Jason Farmery who produced a decent catch. Jasons winning weight was, largely, made up of three good Carp; all between 6 and 7lb and along with one or two silver fish the 20lb total was way out in front.
The second and third placed catch's highlight what kind of a day it was. Alan Smith foul hooked a 3lb Bream and the in the last minute of the competition latched onto a 8lb+ Carp....using light Silver fish tackle on the Pole!!! A few heart stopping moments when Al's Pole was bent double saw him use all of the fifteen minutes overtime allowed, to land his Bonus and claim second place . Simon Pepper also managed to foul hook a Carp, his a 6lb14oz'er hooked through the nose! . Simon was winning the match, untill Jason started catching....Second untill Alan hooked his last minute Carp and eventually had to settle for third place... .
Paul Cooke also had just one fish, another Bream, his weighing in at 1lb 14oz. Mick Farmery managed to catch a few of the recently stocked Skimmers, but they were soon to dry up....Mick also finishing on 1lb 14oz, and the two of them shared the Section 1 prize. Just to sum up what a lottery the Match was, Vinnie Logi had just one bite on peg 13, but it was enough to win him Section 2.....from a 1lb 14oz Pike!!!
