Winter League starts against the odds
At last there is something to report on the Broome AS website!!! after almost six weeks of enforced layoff the Winter Leaguers made every effort to get the series underway on schedule. As most of you will already know the Lakes are still under a covering of pretty thick ice. With a slight respite during the last week when temperatures managed to lift slightly higher than freezing point for a few days, it allowed the intrepid matchmen to break out enough swims to enable some sort of fishing match to take place.
As can be seen from the results it was, as expected, very tough going.... The only fish willing to "feed" were very small Perch ; the sort of size that are so often cursed when they take your bait in normal conditions!! . But, it has to be said, they were very welcome to the eleven members who competed in round one of the Winter League!!
Jason Farmery carried on the new year in much the same vane as he ended the previous one, securing his first win of 2011 with 1lb of Perch, nineteen in all, for the top spot from peg 4. Steve Harrison had a very similar match on the opposite side of the Lake, but with not quite as many "stripy shirted footballers" Steve had to settle for the runner-up spot with his 12oz from peg 44. Keith Macfarlane netted a Perch of around 6oz, a monster on the day , and it took quite a bit of catching up....Sadly for Keith he could only add about five or six of its little brothers and had to be content with third place with 10oz from peg 31.
Vinnie Logi was the only angler to put any Roach on the scales, four to be precise, and along with the inevitable Perch, Vinni took section 1 with 9oz from peg 10. Whilst everyone else was catching small Perch, Mark Aitkins decided to try for some tiny Perch!!! .... Catching seventeen for just 7oz! It was still good enough to win him section 2 though...
Well done to all those who competed, and lets hope for some milder temperatures soon so that we can all get some proper fishing!
